THE MEMORY OF
AN ELEPHANT
by Alex Lasker

If you’ve read the liner notes for THE MEMORY OF AN ELEPHANT, you know the book is about an old African elephant journeying home. Simple as that sounds, that’s incredibly complex, from a writing standpoint, because not only does it mean that Alex Lasker, the author, drops us into fascinating geography to tell the tale of a big, beloved beast that isn’t human, but it also means Lasker delves into the mind of the aging elephant, Ishi, to bring us Ishi’s story. And because Ishi is aging, there’s a long lifetime of story to tell. Lasker’s execution of that story is brilliant. His ability to inject “humanness” into Ishi’s relatable journey through life is genius.
